A People's History of Psychoanalysis
Народная история психоанализа
In his book, analyst, lecturer, and *Chimères* journal editor Florent Gabarron-Garcia challenges the notion of psychoanalysis’s political neutrality. He argues that the discipline has always been a vital part of public culture and is inconceivable outside the context of world history. Gabarron-Garcia sheds light on aspects of psychoanalysis that have been repressed—or all but forgotten—yet run counter to the capitalist logic that the discipline, like so many others, follows today. Through accounts of the work of Wilhelm Reich, Vera Schmidt, Marie Langer, Félix Guattari, and others, Gabarron-Garcia focuses on the revolutionary dimension of psychoanalysis, demonstrating how it served as a weapon in the struggle for emancipation. The author’s aim is to present a "people’s" history of psychoanalysis: a story of resistance against punitive psychiatric practices, dictatorships, and the analyst’s "master" stance, all driven by a commitment to improving the lives of ordinary people.
