The Repeated Past

The protagonist of the novel by one of Lithuania's most popular contemporary writers, Herkus Kunčius (born in 1965), is a Lithuanian intellectual of a bohemian nature, languishing in Paris. His observations, reflections, and comments on the French capital and its inhabitants form the content of the book.
In the author's depiction, Paris initially evokes astonishment, which turns into a smile, and then into uncontrollable laughter. Kunčius's novel is a true display of irony, sarcasm, and grotesque. It is a page-turner, allowing readers to relish the author's language and style.
Kunčius skillfully reveals the comedic side of many familiar phenomena, values, and attitudes. This helps us part with our flaws and our past—at least with those aspects of the past that are worth leaving behind.
