Siberian Haiku
Сибирские хайку
«Siberian Haiku» is a graphic novel about a deported Lithuanian family, reflecting the stories of thousands of other families in the 20th century.
"I am Algis, but most people call me Algiukas. I always dreamed of traveling. However, it happened in a way I never imagined. At dawn on June 14, 1941, soldiers burst into our home and ordered us to pack for a journey. Leaving our native Lithuania, we had no idea that ahead of us lay hard labor, hunger, and biting, nasty parasites in a cold barrack – our new home in Siberia.
How will our lives unfold here? Father taught us to notice the world's wonders and support each other. And we try: we organize the 'Apples' choir, learn to play musical instruments, and even fall in love. And we never stop hoping to return home."
