Life flies over our basement.

Жизнь летит над нашим подвалом

This diary is over sixty years old. It is unusual—perhaps even unique—because it was kept by three authors simultaneously: the young sculptors Vladimir Lemport, Vadim Sidur, and Nikolai Silis, who worked together. The events described take place primarily in their studio over the course of a single year—from the autumn of 1960 to the autumn of 1961. This was the era known as the "Thaw," a time when a new, light, and optimistic spiritual atmosphere was taking shape. The central figures are the authors themselves, along with their friends and acquaintances. Among them are A. Vaksberg, K. Vanshenkin, V. Dudintsev, E. Yevtushenko, Yu. Koval, L. Kopelev, A. Mitta, E. Neizvestny, B. Okudzhava, I. Savvina, G. Sapgir, Ya. Segel, B. Slutsky, and many others who left their mark on the history of Russian culture. The diary recounts specific cultural events—art exhibitions, films seen, concerts attended, and so on. At the same time, its pages offer a chronicle of daily life: stories about work, mundane domestic issues, endless romantic escapades, and boisterous gatherings. Together, these elements capture the lifestyle of the young bohemian set and the very spirit of the times, brought to life through the authors' efforts.

"Whatever we write, we are painting a portrait of ourselves," noted one of the authors, Vladimir Lemport. "That is the essence of this three-way diary. Every entry is a self-portrait, rendered with considerable accuracy." It is a self-portrait created during—and set against the backdrop of—the "Thaw."

The authors treated their writing as a work of art: this is not a mere "log" of names, activities, and events, but a finished book with a compelling narrative arc full of unexpected twists and turns. For cultural historians—and indeed for anyone reading this diary—it will serve as a highly valuable source on the history of the "Thaw" and the history of art.
