And This Is How They Used to Sing: The Musical Folklore of Old Believers in Northwestern Belarus
І даўней так пелі: Музычны фальклор старавераў паўночна-заходняй Беларусі
This book is the result of years of dedicated research into the musical folklore of the Old Believers of the Western Dvina region. It comprises three sections: "Valachobnyya Songs" (ritual songs for St. George's Day), "Krutukhi, Round Dances, and Walking Songs," and "Lyrical Songs." Each section features comprehensive ethnomusicological commentary in three languages: Belarusian, Russian, and English. Transcriptions of conversations and song lyrics from field expeditions are presented in the local dialect of the Old Believers. The collection includes 45 musical and textual transcriptions of folk songs (published here for the first time), each accompanied by an authentic audio recording. The earliest recording dates back to 1963, and the oldest singer featured in the edition was born in the 1890s. The book is illustrated with photographs collected or taken during folklore and ethnographic expeditions.
