Three autobiographical sketches (1921, 1922, 1936), written by Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) for meetings of the Memoir Club—informal dinner gatherings among close friends where each member of the "Old Bloomsbury" group would take turns speaking candidly about their past—offer witty yet profound glimpses into the family and social life of the Edwardian era, as well as the introspections of this English writer during the interwar period. Never intended for publication, these pieces did not appear in print until 1976, eventually taking their place alongside her celebrated novels and essays. Woolf deftly blends the personal and the public, the decorous and the frank, the profound and the superficial, the desired and the real, the painful and the life-affirming—promising to "call back to mind a number of my own memories, and in doing so, perhaps awaken some of yours as well."
