The book by the émigré writer Antanas Škema is one of the most significant works of modern Lithuanian classics. The author opened the gates to the world for Lithuanian literature, freeing it from the captivity of realism. The events in the book take place on several levels - the narrator works as an elevatorman in a New York hotel and experiences a sensual drama, while his life is reconstructed from biographical notes against the background of the history of Lithuania in the first half of the 20th century, and his inner surrealistic universe, woven from philosophical reflections and Lithuanian folklore, is also revealed.
