Culture industry
Культурная индустрия
The essay "The Culture Industry" is a chapter from the seminal book *Dialectic of Enlightenment* (1947), authored by Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno—key figures of the Frankfurt School. In this text, the founders of critical theory examine the culture industry as a means of manipulating the masses through standardized, uniform works of art. These works, devoid of any genuine human value, function merely as commodities designed solely for the generation of profit. The culture industry exploits the desire of individuals living under late capitalism for quick, easy entertainment—a way to seek distraction from the burdens of life, such as inequality and oppression. Although Horkheimer and Adorno focused their analysis on radio and cinema, the very concept of the "culture industry" has since served as a foundation for studying a wide range of other media, and it remains highly relevant even in today’s digital age.
