The book *Cybernetics and the Origin of Information* (1954) by the French philosopher and proponent of the scientific worldview Raymond Ruyer (1902–1987) is one of the earliest yet most original studies of cybernetics, offering a critical re-examination of its standard premises. The author analyzes the distinctions between carrier and meaning, technical signal processing and psychological semantics, and mechanical feedback loops and human understanding. Integrating philosophy, biology, psychology, and systems theory, Ruyer poses a pivotal question: how is the emergence of new information possible if machines—according to cybernetic models—are capable only of processing pre-existing data? The answer leads beyond mechanistic explanations toward an analysis of consciousness, meaning, and creative action—phenomena that, in the thinker's view, remain fundamentally human.
