...a Long Time Ago, It Seems, Last Friday...
…давным-давно, кажется, в прошлую пятницу…
Jan T. Gross (b. 1947) is a historian who has played a significant role in the public discourse that began in the late 1980s and is still ongoing, concerning the role Poles played in the destruction of the Jewish population in Poland during the Holocaust. Gross was the first to reveal historical facts about the mass killing of Jews by Poles.
Following the publication of his book "Neighbors" in 2000, which detailed the events in Jedwabne, an investigation was initiated, and in 2002, Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski issued an official apology to the Jewish people.
This published book of conversations is not only a return to painful topics but also an intriguing biography of the historian against the backdrop of history. The interview chronicles Gross's entire life journey, which is inextricably linked to the dramatic events in Poland in the second half of the 20th century: the youth opposition, the events of 1968, emigration, his work on Holocaust history, and the writing of books that stir public consciousness.
