How to Make Capitalism Acceptable for Society
Как сделать капитализм приемлемым для общества
Capitalism is the only system we know that can produce an efficient and innovative economy, but the financial crisis has exposed its malignant side and shown that it still depends on the state for its survival. Can capitalism be reformed so that it is acceptable to society, or should we accept the view that society is better off leaving markets free in all areas? The aim of this book is to show that embracing capitalism and the market does not mean embracing unfettered markets, insecure labour markets, and neglect of the environment and public services. In particular, embracing capitalism does not mean endorsing the growing influence of corporate wealth in public life. The most successful economies in the world today are those that combine market discipline with the need for protection from its negative consequences. The ongoing and intractable tension between these two forces is itself an important source of vitality and innovation for economies and societies. But maintaining this tension depends on maintaining strong trade unions and other important civil society groups.
