This book explores the work of more than four hundred women who have created art over the course of five centuries. The earliest-born artist featured was born in 1490, while the youngest was born in 1990. For many of these women, being female is not the defining factor of their artistic practice. Furthermore, this book is not a survey of feminist art, nor is it a curated selection of works focused on the "female experience" or "women’s themes." The artworks presented here generally transcend gender-based subject matter; instead, they serve to demonstrate the vast, diverse range of approaches to theme, material, form, and technique that exist within contemporary art. Ultimately, this book is the culmination of an extensive, decades-long project dedicated to researching the creative contributions of women artists who have left their mark on history. At the same time, it is a tribute to living artists across the globe, whose work stands as a testament to their enduring creative power.
