Kurt Pintus's now-classic anthology was first published in 1919 by Ernst Rowohlt. Six of the anthology's 23 contributors did not live to see the book's publication. Four died in World War I. Pintus's symphony of contemporary poetry proved so popular that it was reprinted dozens of times in Germany, which, however, did not save the book from being included on burning lists. We can only caution the reader against interpreting the anthology's title too ambiguously and remind them that twilight falls twice a day.
