Why Architecture Is Not Art
Почему архитектура не искусство
This collection brings together ten essays by the Austrian architect Adolf Loos (1870–1933), written between 1898 and 1931. A brilliant writer and a sharp-tongued critic of modernist trends in art, Loos was both an architectural theorist and a practicing architect. The texts included here address the work of his contemporaries—such as Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann—as well as his own projects, including the famous "House without Eyebrows" on Vienna’s Michaelerplatz. In seeking to answer the question "how should one live in the modern age?", the author reflects on artisanal versus industrial labor, the limits of creative freedom for architects and artists, and the relationship between a building's exterior appearance and its functionality. These bold, forthright reflections—ahead of their time—not only outline Loos’s own worldview but also document the history of architectural transformation during the first third of the twentieth century.
