(Un)Feminine Economy: How Gender Inequality Limits Our Economic Potential
(Не)женская экономика. Как гендерное неравенство ограничивает наш экономический потенциал
Today, women still suffer from financial and social oppression and have fewer opportunities to realize their career potential than men. Economist Linda Scott, who has implemented many projects for gender equality both in third world countries and in the West, shows that a civilized society still has many barriers to overcome in this area. And most importantly, not only women themselves, but also corporations, governments and the global economy as a whole will benefit from the expansion of women's economic rights.
Using specific cases from the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa, the author shows how the involvement of women's potential in the economic process increases companies' revenues and reduces their reputational risks, how socially significant initiatives are implemented and the GDP of countries grows. Moreover, this growth is especially significant today in poor and developing countries.
Scott points out many economic injustices that limit women all over the world: fathers sell their daughters against their will; banks discriminate against women applying for loans; corporations pay women less than men; governments are denying women affordable childcare; and much more. But the book is unique in that it moves beyond the realm of ethics to the realm of economic efficiency. Increasing the profitability of economies becomes a great argument for people making political and business decisions.
