Empires of the Middle Ages: from the Carolingians to the Genghisids

Империи Средневековья: от Каролингов до Чингизидов

The book "Empires of the Middle Ages" edited by the famous medievalist historian Sylvain Guggenheim is the first to collect under one cover works describing the formation and development of 16 empires in different parts of the world.

The purpose of this collection is to cover with a single glance similar political entities within the framework of an extended chronological period on a planetary scale. The structure of the presentation of the material is determined by the division of empires into three groups proposed by Guggenheim: empires-universa (such as the Carolingian Empire, Byzantium, the Mongol and Chinese empires, etc.), empires isolated in a certain geographical space (Bulgarian, Serbian, Japanese, the Latin Empire of Constantinople, the solar empires of Latin America), as well as empires with dispersed territories (the German Empire of the Ottonians, the Norman Empire, the Plantagenet Empire, the thalassocratic empires of Venice and Srivijaya).

The articles by the authors, among whom are both eminent scientists and bright young researchers, are distinguished by the originality of their approaches, are filled with facts and conclusions that are of undoubted interest not only for specialists, but also for the widest circle of history buffs.

"Despite their aspirations and power, empires die, often falling victim to their own immensity and the disasters it creates."

Features
An unprecedented journey through medieval empires that existed in different parts of the world awaits you.

"Length and lack of communication, among other things, explain the diversity of imperial experience. But these differences do not prevent us from seeing similar practices, common problems, and sometimes similar solutions."
