River Without Banks. Part 3: Epilogue
Река без берегов. Часть 3: Эпилог
"Epilogue" is the fourth book, concluding the publication of the great experimental novel "River Without Banks." This novel is a revolution in sensory perception, a unique phenomenon in 20th-century world literature.
"Epilogue" (published posthumously in 1961) is a fragment of the unfinished third part of "River Without Banks," the main work of the German writer, created between 1935 and 1947 on the Danish island of Bornholm. The novel reflects the fragmentation that Yann perceived towards the end of his life as a characteristic feature of all his activities: "My own life is a series of unfinished or unfinishable processes," he wrote to publisher Peter Suhrkamp in May 1958.
At the center of the coming-of-age narrative is the meeting between Nikolai, the illegitimate son of composer Gustav Anias Horn and Gemma, and Ajax, the murderer of his father, who poses as Horn's friend, Alfred Tutain. In this part, events that previously branched out in various directions in time and space are examined from a new perspective.
The book includes commentary by translator and philologist Tatyana Baskakova, as well as a detailed article on the recurring motifs of the novel, supplemented by a color insert with dozens of artworks that help to understand Yann's creativity.
