The Tourist's Philosophy

Философия туриста

Independent Japanese philosopher and cultural critic Hiroki Azuma (b. 1971) views the figure of the tourist as a metaphor for the Other—a symbol of incompleteness, contingency, and openness. This mode of being offers a potential response to the challenges of a world where globalization and nationalism do not merely oppose one another but strangely coexist—a world defined by a crisis of the public and the private, of the familiar and the foreign. In keeping with his subject matter, the author eschews the attempt to construct a homogeneous theory; instead, he weaves together philosophical analysis, essays, mathematics, trips to Chernobyl, and observations of everyday life. Through reflections on tourism, family, the phenomenon of the "uncanny," derivative creativity, interfaces, and Dostoevsky, Azuma maps out a speculative vision of modernity in which contingency is not a threat, but a condition for the emergence of the new. *Tourist Philosophy* is not a book *about* the tourist, but one that invites us to think *like* a tourist—freely and unconstrainedly—in pursuit of a new understanding of solidarity.
