Why did the attempt at transformation in the 1990s fail and result in a harsh authoritarian government being established in Russia?

Renowned economist Sergei Aleksashenko continues to search for an answer to this question, which he did in his previous books — “Battle for the Ruble,” dedicated to the events of 1994–1998, and “Counterrevolution,” where he analyzed the changes that took place in Russia in 2000–2017, during the rule of Vladimir Putin.

This time, the author focuses on the period of 1990–1995, which largely determined the subsequent course of Russian and world history, and a narrower question: why did Western countries, primarily the United States, not come to Russia’s aid and not dare to involve it in their economic and political orbit, as in the case of Germany and Japan after the end of World War II?
