Schools. Nurseries. Kindergartens

Школы. Ясли. Детсады

The book "Architecture of Interwar Kyiv: Schools, Nurseries, Kindergartens" presents the history of mass construction of schools and preschool institutions in interwar Kyiv. The book lists all school buildings, including those destroyed between 1941 and 2018, as well as most preschool institutions. For each school, the years of construction, standard project numbers, and authors of most structures have been identified.

Special attention in the book is given to the people involved in the mass school construction. The names of not only architects but also construction managers, foremen, Stakhanovites, and others involved have been brought back from obscurity.

In addition to the official history of creative achievements and labor feats, readers are also exposed to the darker side of the era — theft, shoddy work, and harsh living conditions.

"Toilet stories are always memorable. Recently, I learned that a section about toilets was the favorite part of my book on schools for one reader. After all, a toilet is a sign of civilization! Well, what did you think, that a book about schools would be boring? (I know many thought this book was dull until they read it).

Let me quote a fragment about architect Kodner's unsuccessful attempt to install toilets in the schools being constructed: the author aimed not only to create the most convenient layout and consider the requirements of insulation and ventilation but also to equip the schools with the highest quality. Toilets, referred to at the time as 'English,' were installed. According to the author, toilets were installed not only for hygiene purposes but also to instill a sense of culture in children.

However, in 1938, Kodner was forced to admit that the installed toilets in schools were a mistake — no one knew how to use them. Instead, everyone began climbing onto them with their feet. Chairs were placed in front of the toilets, which overturned, broke, rotted, and children fell. As a result, Kodner concluded that it was too early for our people to have toilets — let them climb onto the more familiar Genoa-style ones." S. Shyrochin
