Grass
Трава
Keum Suk Gendry-Kim's graphic novel tells the story of Lee Ok-seon, a Korean woman sold to another family as a child and forced into sexual slavery at a Japanese "comfort station." Along with this young girl, we find ourselves on the brink of World War II and relive the horrors of the Japanese occupation for ordinary Koreans.
Grass is a powerful anti-war novel that uncompromisingly exposes the horrific cost of war and affirms the importance of peace. It was named one of the best comics of 2019 by The New York Times and The Guardian, and won the Harvey and American Library Association prizes, as well as the Big Other Book Award, Cartoonist Studio Prize, and Krause Essay Prize.
