A collection of free verse and prose poetry by a 35-year-old Swedish poetess, translated by participants of the III Sviyazhsk Workshop on Poetic Translation under the guidance of Alyosha Prokopyev and Mikael Nyudahl. "Do not succumb to the feeling spread across the landscape," the lyrical subject persuades herself, and this, in principle, succeeds — although, it would seem, in Scandinavian poetry, this is a rarely achievable feat.
Numerous landscape references appear here as stage directions, and the heroine existing within the landscape is self-sufficient: "I crouch by the water, the surface is quietly rippling. Its silence is not the same as the silence within me." This self-sufficiency, existing as a full-fledged element of the world, is an intellectual endeavor: "I must constantly fight for the place from which I speak."
The discussion of this struggle is not about the scene and events but about personal reactions to them, questioning one's place in their context — the main content of the book. Like many before her, Berglund questions how it is even possible to be true to oneself in speech ("I must meet in the language, affirm / That it is about me"), and whether it is possible to make language adequately reflect reality.
In search of answers to these questions, her speech may be reduced to unemotional phrases — almost Wittgensteinian protocol statements, or, on the contrary, become slow and meditative, seemingly deliberately contradicting the idea of constant and involuntary renewal of the "self." To the attentive reader of contemporary poetry, Berglund's book may remind one of the writings of Yevgenia Suslova or the art of unobvious questions by Ron Silliman.
States created by me on the edge, and the reality that is possible. You know nothing about me here. The turbulent current, foam under the bridge. I look at the water: it happens below, this invisible movement. How I am fulfilled in the water. I turn to the other side of the bridge, look at the river, now calm, the lake that gave its name. In spring, it floods the nearby meadows.
