Pieter-Jan, an invited guest at a biennial in the Flemish hinterland, finds himself the only professional artist among the festival's participants. He begins dispensing advice to the clueless but enthusiastic local amateurs and decides to build a giant garden gnome that will steal all the attention. However, from the very first day, Pieter-Jan is plagued by a series of failures, and his grand project is threatened by the envy and ambitions of other artists.

"Amateurs" is a deceptively superficial comedy about the contemporary art business. With his characteristic depth and wit, Flemish artist Brecht Evens reflects on the nature of creativity, art, and relationships, drawing inspiration from his surroundings and the works of great artists.
