The Italian writer Franco Arminio lives in the small town of Bisaccia, situated in the mountains some fifty kilometers east of Naples. His signature style—short, rhythmic prose that falls somewhere between poetry and aphorism—is already familiar to Russian readers from his book *Postcards from the Other World* (2010). In the collection *Small Sanctities*, he turns his attention to the simple, inconspicuous details of life: a sprout pushing through the gravel, a photograph of a son resting against a mother’s chest, a father dozing off at the coffee table, the gentle breath of a breeze, and the silence between one’s toes. One hundred and fifty micro-texts, each three or four lines long, echo one another with a ritualistic opening—"holy, sacred, sanctities"—transforming the collection into a mantra. For Arminio, anything that instinctively evokes a sense of reverent empathy in a person is sacred.
