According to a contemporary, Gilles Deleuze was a true cinephile. "He understood—earlier and better than the rest of us—that, in a sense, society itself is cinema." Deleuze did not merely cultivate a culture of film viewing; he also sought to understand the role philosophy could play in comprehending cinema and, conversely, how cinema had irrevocably altered philosophy. He was one of the few who, while reflecting on cinema, also attempted to think *through* it. Arguably, no other philosopher has written about cinema with such depth from the standpoint of serious philosophy without reducing it to a mere object of study to be viewed from the outside.
