Jan Tschichold (1902–1974) was a renowned European typographer. Few writers on typography and book aesthetics (and there aren’t many) can express their views and share their experiences with such clarity and certainty as Tschichold. He worked in the book business for over forty years. Starting with the destruction of outdated ideas, he achieved a lot and trained several generations of book artists. Tschichold himself designed a huge number of Swiss and English editions.
“The Form of the Book” brings together Tschichold’s most important essays – the only articles not included here are those in which Tschichold argued against temporary errors in typography. The collection helps to understand why so many books look ugly and to truly appreciate rare, truly beautifully executed editions. Therefore, it will be of interest to typographers, publishers and designers, as well as all readers who love books.
