The memoirs of German journalist and historian Sebastian Haffner (1907–1999), written in exile in 1939, cover the period from 1914 to 1933.

The author seeks to answer the question of how the events of this decade prepared Germans for the acceptance of Nazi rule. He explores how the multilayered socio-political soil was created and nurtured, upon which the Third Reich was built.
