In the work of renowned philosopher and design theorist Tony Fry, *Defuturing: A New Design Philosophy*—first published in 1999 yet addressing questions of design and the world that, despite their urgency, are only just beginning to be grasped—an attempt is made to establish what the author himself calls a "new basis for thinking and practice" regarding design and the world, a foundation for a "new agenda of thinking, making, and living." This basis and agenda concern whether we are capable—and if so, to what extent—of a mode of thinking intent on acting well in the face of the imminent, immanent catastrophe threatening the existing order.
