Graphic Worlds of Vasily Vladimirov: From the History of Russian Art Nouveau
Графические миры Василия Владимирова: Из истории русского модерна
The subject of the monograph is the life and creative work of the artist of the first third of the 20th century Vasily Vasilyevich Vladimirov. A classmate of Boris Bugaev (Andrei Bely) in the gymnasium and Moscow University, Vladimirov was actively present in the literary circles of the Young Symbolists, and in his artistic work he developed themes and motifs characteristic of early and mature Art Nouveau. This artist is one of the few Symbolists who worked exclusively in graphics. He studied easel graphics techniques in Munich, where his style was strongly influenced by the Secession. After the revolution of 1917, the artist moved to Petrograd and spent the last decade of his life there, collaborating mainly with children's publishers. The artist's legacy is quite fragmented: the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and the Russian Museum contain easel graphics from the late 1900s and early 1910s, while the Vologda Picture Gallery contains mostly watercolors from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Thanks to my acquaintance with the artist's family collection, which has unfortunately dispersed across the antique market in recent years, the author was able to recreate the evolution of the artist's style and examine his work in the context of general trends in Russian art of the first third of the 20th century.
