Polina Zherebtsova's documentary novel, "The 45th Parallel," is based on the author's personal diaries from 2005–2006. "My mother and I came to Stavropol from Grozny, from the strict Muslim world. We came from the war, as if from another planet, we are refugees. We have our own heavy burden and our own nightmares. But even here, on the peaceful 45th parallel, we find no peace or help. Intimidation. Insults. Bribes... Gradually, we get to know different people and learn about their difficult lives, their sorrows. This is life without war. But is it much better? Military or civilian, rich or poor, young or old, you always choose: to hit, insult, kill, take away—or to help, share bread, give a blanket to the freezing, cheer up. And each of us makes this choice every second. I am on the side of those who can't shoot.
