Besieged Leningrad was a "city of women"—their tragic experiences formed the basis for a poignant and unique body of first-person diary writing. This volume continues a series of publications featuring the diaries of Leningrad residents during the siege, an initiative launched in 2022 by the "Prozhito" Center for the Study of Ego-Documents at the European University at St. Petersburg. In this new volume, the compilers explore the distinct phenomenon of the female diary and the nature of "siege femininity." Between 1941 and 1944, the very concept of social roles shifted within the context of war and a "time of death." This book is about the women who bore the full weight of the catastrophe. It presents eight diaries written by women from Leningrad, each revealing a vastly different experience of the siege: geologist and poet M. N. Voskresenskaya, educator M. N. Vorobyeva, housewife L. D. Borel, military nurse A. V. Britvina, orphanage director N. G. Gorbunova, Communist Party official V. M. Kapitonova, schoolgirl M. S. Roza (Karetnikova), and student and volunteer civil defense worker Z. E. Kondratyeva. Through these accounts—from wives and mothers, daughters and sisters, lovers and widows—we uncover an unwritten history of the women of Leningrad: a narrative woven from sorrow and fear, the hardships of daily life and the struggle for survival, suffering and resistance, the mourning of losses, and—to a profound degree—hope and love.
