"Gardens and Roads" are the diaries of German thinker Ernst Jünger from 1939–1940, opening a sextet of his diaries from the Second World War. Alternating between descriptions of personal life, historical events, and reflective passages, the author demonstrates the possibility of poetic and philosophical existence in the very center of a great catastrophe. This, Jünger's only book published during the Second World War, largely defined the writer's European fame as one of the outstanding stylists of the 20th century.
