A Man Cannot Live Without a Miracle
Человек не может жить без чуда
Varvara Fyodorovna Stepanova (1894–1958) was a Soviet artist, graphic designer, and one of the pioneers of constructivism, often referred to as an "Amazon of the Avant-Garde." Together with her husband, Alexander Rodchenko, she worked on the design of exhibitions and theater productions, served as art director for several magazines, and created fabric and costume designs.
Stepanova's works were exhibited alongside those of her distinguished contemporaries: Kandinsky, Tatlin, Malevich, Rozanova, and Popova. In addition to her artistic achievements, she possessed a unique talent for keenly observing and capturing the essence of her time with sensitivity and insight.
This book, compiled by her grandson Alexander Lavrentiev and great-granddaughter Ekaterina Lavrentieva, gathers Stepanova's diary entries, articles, and lectures from various years. Through these writings, we gain insight into the development of Soviet art in the first half of the 20th century, directly from a participant in those events who considered creativity a "miracle" and pursued this "miracle" throughout her life.
