Modern Polish Dostoevsky

Современный польский Достоевский

This book presents the first study of contemporary Polish reception of Fyodor Dostoevsky through an analysis of materials from the daily newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza from 1989 to 2019. Using over 1,200 newspaper publications, it was possible to create a panoramic picture of the writer's reflection in Polish culture. The author traces the reception of Dostoevsky's biographical narrative, his fiction, journalism, and correspondence; presents comparative literary and cultural connections; peers into theatrical stages and cinemas; traces the presence of the writer's legacy in the educational process in Poland, history, politics, public life, and popular and elite culture; and examines it in unexpected contexts. Special attention is paid to Dostoevsky's ideological world, as presented through the newspaper's reception: Christocentrism and anthropocentrism, the women's question, chauvinism, the "Polish question," the "Eastern question," etc. The study may be of interest to humanities scholars, as well as anyone interested in the works of F. M. Dostoevsky, Polish, Russian, and world culture.
