Animus and Anima in Fairy Tales. The Cat: A Tale of Feminine Rebirth

Анимус и анима в волшебных сказках. Кошка: сказка о возрождении женственности

This book combines two works by Marie-Louise von Franz, who devoted a significant part of her life to the psychological interpretation of fairy tales and myths: "Animus and Anima in Fairy Tales" and "The Cat: A Tale of the Rebirth of Femininity." In them, she examines such central concepts of Jungian analysis as "animus" and "anima"—unconscious structures that manifest as the feminine principle in the male psyche and the masculine principle in the female psyche. Her study of these concepts is based on the psychological interpretation of various folk tales. In particular, in "The Cat: A Tale of the Rebirth of Femininity," she discusses the symbolism of images from the Romanian fairy tale about the enchanted cat princess, revealing the important themes of the liberation of the feminine principle and the union of opposites. These works are based on lectures given by M.-L. von Franz at the K.G. Jung in Zurich in the 1950s, which she co-founded.
