Avant-garde textiles. Fabric designs
Текстиль авангарда. Рисунки для ткани
The book is devoted to textile designs created by artists of the Russian and European avant-garde. In the mid-1920s, a number of outstanding Russian and European artists simultaneously turned to textile design. The projects they created outlined a new artistic language that anticipated future achievements in world fine art, in particular the experiments of pop art and minimalism of the 1950s and 1960s. The focus of the study is on the work of Russian constructivists Lyubov Popova, Varvara Stepanova in Moscow, and Sonia Delaunay in Paris. By the end of the 1920s, the new style of geometric abstraction in textiles had grown into an international trend. The introduction of fabrics made from artists' designs into everyday life significantly influenced the development of public tastes and paved the way for the further development of modernism. Yulia Tulovskaya, a researcher of Russian art and curator of the Zimmerli Museum in the USA, conducted a comprehensive study of the developments of avant-garde artists in the first decades of the 20th century. The visual component of the book is striking - the abundance and meticulous selection of illustrations (prints, patterns, historical photographs) make this publication an exceptional source for studying abstract ornament and the history of its creation. In a word, this is a serious, large-scale study, interesting both to professional art and fashion historians, and to designers and simply connoisseurs of this topic.
