Mikhail Matyushin. Bayach of the Future
Михаил Матюшин. Баяч будущего
He created the first futurist opera, Victory Over the Sun, and invented the constructivist violin; he turned tree roots into sculptures and taught how to paint a landscape while sitting with his back to it; finally, he searched for the “key” to the metaphysical fourth dimension, where space and time merge. All this is about Mikhail Matyushin: a composer, artist, violinist, and one of the leaders of the Russian avant-garde. Despite the significance of his achievements, he was forgotten for a long time after his death, and to this day Matyushin’s name is heard far less often than the names of his associates and friends — Kazimir Malevich, Velimir Khlebnikov, Pavel Filonov... Most of Mikhail Vasilyevich’s legacy has completely fallen out of the public and researchers’ sight. This book is the first attempt to comprehend his work in all its fullness and genre diversity. It publishes for the first time a whole series of drawings and watercolours from Matyushin’s archive, as well as previously unknown musical manuscripts and documents, including fragments of the score of “Victory over the Sun” discovered by the author.
