The era of wire and string

Эпоха провода и струны

The text is a kind of alien report on human culture. But either the alien intelligence cannot fully penetrate the relationships between things and the cause-effect relationships, or it can but is hampered by the structure of language and the ability to organize its observations. What we get here is a series of fusions in which images are torn out of their usual framework and combined with something dissonant. Thus, for example, sex and the wife's revival are combined with the switching on of household devices. Food is seen as an interaction with textiles, so that a map drawn on an animal's skin supposedly indicates points where food might be found, which is close, but not quite right. The pronunciation of names is equated with the generation of real power.
God is identified with the weather, which again is not so far from the truth if we consider early religious pantheons. This book contains descriptions of a vaguely familiar but utterly alien reality, in which some objects are recognizable and others have recognizable names but enter into alien relationships. To satisfy any curiosity that may arise, each section of the book is provided with a glossary of terms. The definitions almost succeed in explaining what is described in the book. Despite the clarity and simplicity of form and syntax, this text is at the limit of human comprehension. Remember: the words we speak, unless interpreted by the vibrations of wires and strings stretched across the mouth, are nothing more than chatter about the weather.
