Eisenstein on Paper
Эйзенштейн на бумаге
The book "Eisenstein on Paper" marks a significant milestone. It presents, for the first time, 500 of the finest graphic works by the great cinema master, stored in his personal collection at RGALI. Some of these works are being published for the first time. In addition to drawings, the album includes frames from Eisenstein's films, scanned from the original film stock.
The publication traces the extraordinary twists and turns of Eisenstein's life and career through the styles of his graphics. Despite their diversity, they are all part of a singular creative evolution: from early childhood drawings to costume and set designs, from absurd psychoanalytical sketches to late abstractions.
Naum Kleiman, a leading researcher of Eisenstein's life and work and the compiler of this monographic album, offers a fresh perspective on the motives and purposes of the director's graphic works. He quotes and comments on excerpts from the master's own reflections and analyses, some of which are also being published for the first time.
The edition opens with an introductory note by the legendary contemporary director Martin Scorsese. The introductory article on the history of Sergei Eisenstein's archive and the vast complex of his graphic legacy is prepared by RGALI director Tatyana Goryaeva. The biographical article is written by British film historian Ian Christie.
