*Como* (2006) is a melancholic autobiographical novel by Serbian writer Srđan Valjarević (b. 1967). Through a twist of fate, a young writer finds himself at a villa in sunny Italy, by picturesque Lake Como; there, surrounded by prominent intellectuals, he spends a month enjoying an abundance of alcohol and the Italian landscape. Yet these idyllic days are filled with contrasts: the protagonist is haunted by memories of war and troubled thoughts about an impoverished Serbia undergoing complex, dramatic changes during the turbulent 1990s.
