This collection of diary entries, articles, letters, poems, and manifestos by Alexander Rodchenko (1891–1956) serves not only as a chronicle of the life of one of the creators of Russian Constructivism but also as the history of an entire artistic movement. For Rodchenko, life itself was a ceaseless creative process—a series of "experiments" vividly reflected in his writings spanning many years: from non-objective poems dedicated to his future wife, Varvara Stepanova, and personal notes filled with wonder and admiration at his immersion in the art world, to articles on photography, design, and the "construction of objects," as well as accounts of his work with contemporaries and friends such as Mayakovsky, Gan, Meyerhold, and Kandinsky.
